Charlotte A. Hickman 88, of Wilmington, DE passed away on June 14, 2014 at her late residence that she shared with her beloved daughter Sherrie, PJ and Matthew. She was born in New York City to the late Charles and Rose (O’Neil) Mergenthaler. Charlotte grew up in Wilmington, Delaware and attended the Marshallton School.
She went to work during the 2nd World War for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Charlotte also worked for Hearn Brothers Grocery Store and eventually retired from Walt’s Deli in Elsmere in2001. Charlotte was a member of Mt. Salem United Methodist Church and previously was a life member at Silverbrook United Methodist Church until its closing. Charlotte enjoyed baking, cooking and spoiling her grandchildren, who were her pride and joy.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Joseph W. Hickman, Sr., her siblings, George Merganthaler, Charles Merganthaler, Jr., Walter Merganthaler, James Merganthaler, Florence Wilkins, Gertrude Wright, Madeline McLaughlin, Margaret Birney and Loretta Davis;
Charlotte is survived by her brothers, Lawrence Merganthaler (Louise), and Frederick Merganthaler; brother in-laws Michael McLaughlin and Calvin Hickman; sister in-law Marion Grabowski; her children Sherrie Saponaro of Wilmington, Joe Hickman of Pike Creek, Carole Lee Benoit (Paul) of Middletown, and her grandchildren Philip J. Saponaro, Jr. (Kelly), Matthew J. Saponaro, Renee Hickman, Curtis Bellamy (Erica), Paul J. Benoit, Jr., Aaron Benoit, Jennifer Benoit; great grandchildren Dillon Bellamy, Anthony Bellamy, Chase Bellamy, Bryce Bellamy and her beloved nieces and nephews who she loved as her own. The family would like to give a special thank you to her niece, Franny Tebbutt, close friends, Nancy Wright and Beverly Ellis; Delaware Hospice, especially Beth Kincaide, Scott Edwards, Linda Walls, Sam and Skeesha, and to Dr. Remedios Abad, for all the love, support and care shown over the years and Ningjing Tian, for helping us in the final weeks we could have not done this without you. We can never thank you all enough.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday June 18 from 6-8pm at the McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway Wilmington 19808. An additional viewing will be held on Thursday from 12:30-1:30 at the funeral home, followed by the service at 1:30. Burial will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery.
