Gary, age 66, of Newark, DE, passed away suddenly into His Savior’s presence on Sunday, October 8, 2017.
He is preceded in death by his father, Melvin R. Ludwig. Gary is survived by his wife, Ellen Appleby Ludwig, his daughter, Corine VanderHaar (Mark), his son, Greg Ludwig, two precious granddaughters, Olivia and Hannah VanderHaar, who were the joy of his life, his mother, Grace Ludwig, his brother, Rob Ludwig (Gail), and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Gary was a graduate of Newark High School. He was trained as an instrument technician and retired in 2006 from Plumbers & Pipefitters Local Union No. 74 after 23 years.
Gary served in the U. S. Coast Guard. He was an active member of Immanuel Church who served behind the scenes with a quiet smile and gentle humor. Gary was an outstanding pitcher who played in baseball leagues since childhood. Ellen became his biggest fan and she rarely missed a game. Gary and Ellen were married for 40 years, and although they were total opposites, they were the perfect balance. Gary was deeply loved by his family. He enjoyed cooking and considered the kitchen his domain. He was greatly interested in all aspects of American history. There was little he couldn’t build or fix. He was always willing to lend a hand.

A celebration of his life will be held at Immanuel Church on Wednesday, October 25, at 11 am. Visitation will begin at 10 am. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Immanuel Church, 2414 Pennsylvania Ave., Wilmington, DE 19806. To offer condolences visit:
