RICHARD E. KIRKWOOD

Richard E. Kirkwood, or “Dick” Kirkwood as he was known by many, was called home to be with our Lord on January 24, 2018. He was 88 years young. Originally from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, he lived in north Wilmington DE since 2000. Prior to Delaware, Richard and his family lived in Linwood New Jersey from 1962 to 1977 and Egg Harbor Township from 1977 to 2000.

Richard proudly served his country during the Korean War in the United State Marine Corp from 1951 to 1959. His experience and expertise as an electronics specialist led to a successful career with the Federal Aviation Administration for more the 40 years. He worked at the National Aviation Facilities Research Center (NAFEC) in Pomona NJ.

Richard was involved with many organizations throughout his career. Most recently, he served as President and Secretary of the Claymont Delaware Chapter of AARP. He was a member of Chester Bethel UMC and was a Trustee for many years. In earlier years, he achieved the highest level of recognition from Toastmasters International for public speaking and was named Man of the Year two times. He loved public speaking and motivating people to achieve success. He was president of South Jersey Kiwanis Club and actively involved in helping young entrepreneurs through Junior Achievement. He worked with the Boy Scouts Council of South Jersey. He served as president of the Mainland Regional High School Band Boosters and was an active member of the Mainland Chamber of Commerce. In April of 2008, “Brother” Richard was honored for 50 years of distinguished service as a Master Mason with the Keystone Lodge #153, F. & A.M.

Richard had many interests and hobbies. In 1977, he built a home in Egg Harbor Township that was heated by solar panels he made himself. It was the first in South Jersey. In 1981 he erected a windmill in his back yard that produced 60% of the electricity he needed to live comfortably. But he was never too busy to help someone repair their television, a broken radio, or fix their automobile. He did it all with a smile because he could.

Richard is the son of Earl B. and Eva Kirkwood of Pittsburgh, PA (both deceased). He is survived by his son Gregory Kirkwood of East Earl PA (Deborah), and daughter Karen Ingalls (Alan) of Ellicott City MD, six grandchildren Kevin, Kristopher and Kaitlin Kirkwood, Kristin, David and Emily Ingalls and two great-grandchildren Harper and Bailey. Richard’s wife of 55 years, Doris M Kirkwood, preceded him in death in 2012. In addition, Richard and his family acknowledge and thank Doris Lloyd and her family who have been wonderful friends to the Kirkwood family and a compassionate friend and companion to Richard.

Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing on February 8th, 2018 from 5 to 7 PM at McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington Delaware, 19803.
