GLORIA MITCHELL LAGERGREN

Gloria, 94, passed away peacefully early Sunday, April 22, 2018 after a brief illness. She was born in Manchester, England to William McPherson Mitchell and Dorothy Cookney Mitchell. She emigrated to America at the age of 5 months through Ellis Island. She grew up in Nutley, New Jersey where she met Richard Lagergren whom she married in 1946 after completing her B.F.A. in Interior Design at Syracuse University. They moved to Wilmington, DE where Richard completed college after the war at University of Delaware.
Gloria loved creating beautiful artwork from a young age and continued to pursue that love through painting, making cut and painted lampshades, and designing needlepoint canvases. She was a member of The Studio Group, taught painting at The Methodist Country House, and interior design at the Alma Moore College. She began a 50 plus year association with Winterthur Museum as a guide in the 1960's. Her painted backdrops can be seen through some of the historic interior windows there. Fond memories of Gloria will sustain her family, and her legacy will live on through her many and varied artistic accomplishments.
She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Lagergren. Gloria is survived by daughters Kristin L. Ledden (Ted) of Wilmington and Nancy L. Charamella (Robert) of Columbia, MD. Also surviving are grandchildren Lauren Kolazas of Alexandria, VA, Vanessa Bailey of Madison, WI, Robin Bailey of Jersey City, NJ, Rebecca Ledden of Denver, CO, Michael Charamella of Baltimore, MD, Matthew Charamella of Copenhagen, Denmark, and six great grandchildren.
Gloria’s family would to thank the staff of Stonegates’ Healthcare for their patience and loving kindness towards Gloria during her final days.
A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Christ Church Christiana Hundred, 505 E. Buck Road, Wilmington, DE on Thursday, May 10th at 11:30. Burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to: ℅ Development, Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, Winterthur, DE 19735.
