JOHN E. MACWILLIAMS
Col. John E. MacWilliams
Devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, age 89
went to be with the Lord shortly after noon on November 11, 2009.
The army veteran of both WWII and the Korea Wars had a divine
appointment this Veteran’s Day and was taken to Heaven.
John was born in Philadelphia, PA and graduated from Drexel University
with an electrical engineering degree. In the summer of 1942, he enlisted
into the army in the Signal Corps.
In 1943 John fought in World War II as an aerial gunner in the South Pacific.
By the age of 24, Corporal MacWilliams had participated in 37 Pacific Missions.
Later, he fought in the Korean War and commanded a platoon.
He was one of the few officers to attend the prestigious War College.
John was honored with numerous medals for his conduct in the army including
the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal.
After the war, he worked as an engineer for Westinghouse in the Steam Turbine Division. In 1980, John retired as a full Colonel, after 38 years in the army.
He is survived by his two sons, Dr. Edward MacWilliams and David B. MacWilliams
of Ocala FL, and his two daughters, Virginia E. Platt and Donna M. Gillow of DE, and their children and grandchildren. His beloved wife of almost 60 years,
Grace D. MacWilliams preceded him to Heaven in 2006.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 18, at 12:30pm at the MCCRERY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME,3924 Concord Pk. Talleyville (Rt 202,just south of Silverside Rd),where friends may call after 11:30am. Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
